CONCLUSION

It is popularly believed that superstition is derogatory and that superstitious beliefs imply the absence of reason, it is an unfair and to some extent, a narrow perspective.

Education and reason allow for an attitude of acceptance towards the ways of the world, however different. Some superstitious beliefs, today, are clearly visible as sexist. Nevertheless, it is must not be discounted that many such beliefs were, in fact, based on reason and made sense back then. In many cultures in India and abroad superstitious beliefs hold the gravity of society and regulations of life. It is perceived to give direction to the governance of both individuals and communities at large. It was a means to discipline life. The idea of looking up to something as a higher power in the role of people’s lives also brought a sense of humility. It is a way of life. It is part of tradition and culture; identity even, to some.

Superstitious beliefs must not hold back an individual from growth or progress in any aspect of life. However, as educated liberals it would be ironic if we treated all superstitious beliefs with a generalized scorn accompanying disrespect for cultures.
